Maryland Center on Economic policy is holding a listening session for metro DC area to discuss priorities for upcoming election season. Great opportunity for anyone working at the state level. Healthy Montgomery, the County’s local health improvement coalition, is asking people to complete a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Oral Health Capacity and Environmental Demand Scan Survey to assess resources available. The information collected will be used to address oral health concerns in the community; align and leverage resources; and contribute to the creation of a Community Health Improvement Plan for Montgomery County. In addition, the data will be posted on the Healthy Montgomery website and will be available to the public.
Organizations can be any type of group that provides oral health services in Montgomery County, such as hospitals, government agencies, social service providers, educational institutions, health insurers, and public and private dental offices and clinics. The deadline for completing the survey is Friday, Sept. 10.
Walt Whitman High School is starting a new program called the Leadership Academy for Social Justice (LASJ). LASJ courses are rooted in personal development and intercultural skills while building on communication and thinking skills. Students in the program will participate in courses such as an Introduction to Social Justice, Women’s Studies, LGBTQ+ Studies, African-American Studies, Media in Society, and an internship program.
The program is looking to partner with local and regional organizations to provide meaningful internships for students. Through these internships, students will be able to apply their knowledge of social justice issues and advocacy skills to real-world experiences. The Community Action Board’s Community Advocacy Institute provides County residents with the opportunity to learn and utilize basic advocacy skills. Participants must attend monthly workshops and complete an advocacy project (testifying before County Council or submitting a letter to County Council) in order to graduate from the program. This year, the program will include virtual workshops, in-person outdoor networking events, and in-person testimony practice sessions. Participants must be Montgomery County residents with a combined household income of $57,000 or less. Applications are due August 20.

The information collected will be used to address health concerns in Montgomery County, align and leverage resources, and create a Community Health Improvement Plan for Montgomery County. The information collected will be shared publicly and will be available on the Healthy Montgomery website.
