Montgomery Moving Forward Update

2019-07-10T12:17:04-04:00July 14th, 2019|Montgomery Moving Forward|

Montgomery Moving Forward (MMF), an initiative of Nonprofit Montgomery, continues its work on Early Care and Education in the County. Recently MMF has added four new members to its 44-person Leadership Group that is comprised of government, business, education, nonprofit, philanthropy, and other community leaders who set the direction and strategy for MMF.

Welcome New Leadership Group Members:

  • Terrill North, Executive Director, Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth, and Families
  • BB Otero, Special Assistant, County Executive, Office of the Executive
  • Kimberly Rusnak, Executive Director, Children’s Opportunity Fund
  • Crystal Townsend, President & CEO, Healthcare Initiative Foundation
In other good news, together with Maryland Family Network, local Chambers of Commerce, Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and early educators, we successfully advocated for a tax credit expansion for Maryland parents. On May 13, Governor Hogan signed this expansion of Maryland’s Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit into law!

MMF is working on an Early Care and Education (ECE) Employer Toolkit as a resource for employers and employees. The Toolkit will be a compendium of resources related to ECE programs, services, and policies. Currently, our community has a number of programs and services for working parents that many simply do not know about and therefore do not access.

The Toolkit advisory group is seeking feedback from the local community. Please take a moment to give your opinion on ECE practices and policies by completing a short survey. Feel free to share with others.

Montgomery Moving Forward is a collective impact project of Nonprofit Montgomery. MMF is working on its second issue: Early Care and Education (ECE). In February MMF issued a Call to Action outlining the need for a better system of ECE in Montgomery County. An improved system of ECE will support today’s working families, address the opportunity gap, and prepare the workforce of tomorrow.

Currently MMF is focusing on exploring existing funding sources for the early childhood system in the county in order to identify opportunities for better aligning resources to meet the unique needs of our children, families and employers. The first step to strategic financing is knowing what you have and how it is currently used. MMF is engaged in a fiscal mapping project to analyze the sources and flows of existing funding.

MMF Recent Events:
  • Early Care and Education in Montgomery County: Business Breakfast, October 31 at Social & Scientific Systems, Inc.
  • Exploring How to Get the Most out of Early Care and Education Dollars, October 15 at MCPS Office of HR and Development

What is Montgomery Moving Forward?
Montgomery Moving Forward convenes cross-sector county leaders to address complex community problems, leveraging the Collective Impact model. MMF chooses issues based on input from all sectors of the community. MMF seeks issues that are ripe for systems change, affect a large number of people, and have a disproportionate impact on families who are economically disadvantaged. A 37 member Leadership Group guides the work of MMF. The goal: economic opportunity for all and a thriving Montgomery County.
