Not A Crime to Be Poor – 2 Part Event

The Primary Care Coalition is exploring the health and housing relationship in two parts – from the existing interventions that mitigate health/housing problems to big ideas for integrative solutions. Two informative half-day sessions will explore the impact of stable and affordable housing on health outcomes.

Session One: September 17 
Peter Edelman will walk us through his new book Not a Crime to Be Poor, in which he examines the socio-political influences that have led to the criminalization of poverty.

Session Two: October 15
We’ll explore the role quality, affordable housing plays in the health of residents and look at ways to form strategic links between housing and health systems.

Nonprofit Montgomery Welcomes Five New Board Members

Nonprofit leaders know that a strong, functioning board is essential for success. We at Nonprofit Montgomery are very grateful to the nonprofit leaders who serve on our Board of Directors. Though they are busy leaders of their own organizations, our Board members think broadly about the nonprofit sector and give their time and expertise to furthering our mission to strengthen, support and give visibility to the sector.

This fall we welcome the following new members to our board:

Disability Partnerships 2019 Adaptive Equipment Grant
This is a direct grant given to an individual for the purchase of adaptive equipment to help them make their home or workplaces more accessible. Grant applications are due September 30, 2019. For more information, contact tmgallman@disabilitypartnerships.org.

Many Hands DC Grant  
Many Hands DC will accept applications for its 2020 grant cycle starting October 1, 2019. All applications must be submitted online and are due by November 15. Many Hands is a women’s grantmaking organization that makes grants in four areas: Education, Health, Housing, and Job Readiness. Click here for more information.

HR for Nonprofits: Meaningful Performance Conversations

Every conversation with an employee can be an opportunity for managers to engage, coach, and guide. Performance excellence depends on those conversations being meaningful. Kelly Collins, Director of Human Resources, EveryMind and member of the Board of Directors, Society of Human Resource Management, Montgomery County will lead us in discussing best practices in conducting annual performance reviews as well as addressing performance issues.

We’ll also:  

  • Identify opportunities for communications that inspire and engage
  • Discuss a framework for incremental and annual performance conversations
  • Examine the key elements of a performance improvement process
  • Work through some common challenges and scenarios.
