FY27 County Budget Update

Today, the County Council will cast its official vote on the FY27 Operating Budget. This budget process was an extraordinarily challenging one, as many Councilmembers alluded to in their remarks during the straw vote on Friday, May 15.

We appreciate the many remarks by Councilmembers that acknowledged that while a 3.5% increase was more than the County Executive had proposed, it is not enough to address the increased needs and skyrocketing operational expenses many nonprofits are facing. This was also coupled with a reduction in the Community Grants Non-Departmental Account (NDA) account, which will pause potential funding for resilience centers and other initiatives.

Nonprofit Montgomery will continue to elevate the needs of nonprofits, and we will track and share the impacts that our members continue to see as they move forward with their work.

These challenging budget decisions and trade-offs will only become more challenging in the coming months and years. In December, a new County Executive and five new Councilmembers will be inaugurated. The Nonprofit Montgomery Advocacy Committee designed questionnaires for candidates for those offices; you can see their answers here.
